Susan Dominus, a writer for The New York Times, covered a brilliant story around Wharton’s highest-rated and youngest-tenured professor, Adam Grant, and his research. Yes, this guy is a genius. And I’m not going to say, “I told you so,” on behalf of our beloved Brent Smith who’s only been helping men and women transform radically with his Give-to-Give philosophy for years. The results are extraordinary. Grant’s scientific research has now given us more proof and reasons behind why that’s been possible.
We are always on the lookout for cutting-edge research, information and transformational psychology to continually take our work to the Next Level so it really didn’t surprise us when Jason came across this article.
Grant’s research confirms that by being a giver, you can actually enhance your productivity in life and be more creative. If you read the article, it’s easy to pick up on how much of a social connector he really is. Mentoring students, setting them up with his influential peers, nominating others for awards, providing critiques, offering recommendation letters, responding to emails are just a tip of the iceberg for the requests he freely gives his time to. It’s no wonder that because he gives so abundantly that others give back to him generously and without any hesitation. And get this, its usually for the benefit of others. He just keeps extending it, like Jason’s Starbucks story from the Valentine’s podcast. Susan’s quote just about sums it up:
The greatest untapped source of motivation, he argues, is a sense of service to others; focusing on the contribution of our work to other peoples’ lives has the potential to make us more productive than thinking about helping ourselves.
